Anyone who has tried to diet and lose weight knows how hard it is to find long-term success. Many plans and products offer rapid weight loss as a quick fix, but the bigger challenge is keeping the weight off. Our program helps you do both, with evidence from successful programs in other Kaiser Permanente regions.
You’ll have a team of experts helping you work toward achieving your weight loss goals. Our expert physicians and health educators will guide you through the program to create lasting success. This includes:
Based on meal replacements, group behavior modification sessions, and medically monitored weight loss
Based on transitioning back to conventional food, group behavior modification sessions, and guidance to maintain your goal weight
Your team of Kaiser Permanente medical and weight loss professionals will be available to monitor your health and progress, including periodic checkups and lab tests. They’ll work to reduce your reliance on medications whenever possible. To help you lose weight rapidly and safely, our program includes meal replacement products like shakes, soups, and bars.
Over 31,000 patients in Northern California have participated in the program and experienced an average weight loss of 34.2 pounds at week 17.1 They’ve also seen seen an overall improvement in their health, including lower blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes control, and joint pain relief.

Total price for each phase is the sum of program fees and meal replacements.
Average weekly price of meal replacements is based on consumption of 7 meal replacements per day during the active phase and 3 per day during the maintenance phase. Actual meal replacement consumption will vary for each patient based on physician recommendation.
Maintenance phase includes partial meal replacements only for the first 4 weeks, supplemented by regular meals. Starting at week 18, individuals will transition to regular meals completely. Actual meal replacement consumption will vary for each patient based on physician recommendation.
The Kaiser Permanente Medical Weight Loss Program and associated meal replacement costs are not covered under your health plan benefits and are currently only available to Kaiser Permanente members for an additional fee.

If you are over the age of 18 with a BMI of 30 or more, contact the medical weight loss coordinator to schedule an information session by emailing MedicalWeightLoss@kp.org.
After the information session, decide if you want to join the program.
If you want to join the program, the medical weight loss coordinator will work with you to schedule a medical assessment with a weight management physician to identify if there are any medical conditions that would exclude you from the program.
